Thrall Car Manufacturing Co. began producing "Thrall Door" cars
in 1967. The GB&W bought six cars from Thrall between 1971 and 1973.
They were typically assigned to hauling hardboard products from a plant in

last of the cars were scrapped in 2004.

Prototype info:
The prototype of the Bachmann model are the 2-6-0 locomotives built by
Alco for the Green Bay Route, so this model is a very close match for the
GB&W, with the correct boiler shape, driver spacing, dome placement,
valve gear, piping and tender. The headlight on top of the smokebox and
bell between the domes match the #256 arrangement between 1937, the year
it was renumbered from #56, to 1939 when it was modernized and the
headlight and bell moved to new locations. The major difference between
the model and the prototype is the placement of the air pump on the
fireman's side.

GBW 30-39 were delivered new to the GB&W in 1966. Originally painted

Beginning in 1929 WRX operated a fleet of wooden refrigerator cars for the
Green Bay & Western RR. Beginning in the 1950s some of the cars were
rebuilt with steel sides and plug doors, similar to the model, while other
steel reefers were acquired second-hand.

production of an Alco C-430 model. The model will have correct details for
the GBW #315, including Hi-Ad trucks, fuel tank and no dynamic brakes. It
will be produced in both the GBW's red-and-gray paint scheme and the
all-red paint scheme. The model will be available in both an analog
version with an NMRA 8 pin DCC connector, or a sound equipped vesrion with
a LokSound Select DCC decoder. The model is part of Bowser's 'Executive
Line' which includes details such as grab irons, lift rings, windshield
wipers and coupler lift bars. Pre

The model is equipped with MTH's Proto-Sound 3.0 DCC sound system, a smoke
unit, remote controlled couplers, directionbal headlights and a lighted
cab interior and number boards. The model has MTH's '3-2' system which
lets the operator switch between 3-rail AC and 2-rail DC operation by just
removing the pickup rollers on the bottom of each truck and sliding a
switch from the 3-rail to 2-rail position to reroute the electrical
connections in the locomotive; the Proto-Sound 3.0 system operates on

The Green Bay Route's sixteen Alco 2-6-0 Moguls were built between 1907
and 1924 to very similar plans, with 56-inch drivers. They replaced the
original 4-4-0s on the railroad and were the main power of road freights
during this time, operating either singly or doubleheaded. The Bachmann
model appears to be based off of GBW #56/256, which was the last of the
series built in 1924. Drawings of this locomotive appear in the February
1955 Model Railroader magazine and the book Model Railroader Cyclopedia,
Vol. 1: Steam Locomotives.

Bruce Friesch, a
railroad and marine artist from Wisconsin, is creating an acrylic painting
of the GBW's Green Bay depot with KGB&W #49/350 and C&NW #1385 on
the northbound departure tracks. He had the partially complete painting
displayed at the Titletown Train Show in Green Bay When complete he will
be selling both the one-of-a-kind original painting and also prints of it.

Bachmann is producing an Alco 2-6-0 Mogul in DCC-ready and DCC
sound-equipped models. The DCC sound equipped model includes a Soundtraxx®
package with chuff, short and long whistles, bell, and blow down. The
preproduction model appears to be very similar to GBW #56/256 with the
correct boiler shape, driver spacing, dome placement, bell, headlight,
piping and tender. The major difference between the model and the
prototype is the placement of the air pumps on the fireman's side. Expected:

The Green Bay Route's sixteen Alco 2-6-0 Moguls were built between 1907
and 1924 to very similar plans, with 56-inch drivers. They replaced the
original 4-4-0s on the railroad and were the main power of road freights
during this time, operating either singly or doubleheaded. The Bachmann
model appears to be based off of GBW #56/256, which was the last of the
series built in 1924. Drawings of this locomotive appear in the February
1955 Model Railroader magazine and the book Model Railroader Cyclopedia,
Vol. 1: Steam Locomotives.

Built in 1914-1915 by Haskell & Barker Co., these double-sheathed
truss-rod boxcars with steel center sills were copies of CB&Q boxcars
and became the mainstay of the A&W and KGB&W boxcar fleet until

GBW 16000-16299 were added to the roster in 1980. They were normally
assigned to the Procter & Gamble paper plant in Green Bay. These cars
are outwardly identical to GBW 7000-7049 which were built by FMC at the
same time and previously available from Athearn as an HO scale model.
Fifty of the prototype GBW 16000-16299 cars went to NOKL #16100-16149
about 1993 (only reporting marks revised) and later AERC #5100-5147. The
remainder went to SSAM #25200- 25442, originally just restenciled but
fully repainted by the mid 1990s, then reassigned to WCCL #25200-25442
about 2000.

carry auto parts. This car will not be for the 'purist' and calling it a
'stand-in' is a bit of a stretch. GBW 500-series cars were late

different ends, and a different door plus grab irons instead of a short
ladder on the left-hand side.

The GB&W had four RS-27 diesels on its roster. GB&W #310 was
delivered in 1960 and it was joined by three ex-C&NW locomotives (GBW
#316-318) between 1968 and 1976 . C&NW #903 and #902 were leased by
the GB&W during 1967-1968 and operated in C&NW colors with a GREEN
BAY ROUTE herald on the cab sides. GB&W #310 was the first production
RS-27 and had several unique spotting features including a brake wheel
recessed in the low short hood and a single large cab windshield, while
#316-318 had the 'typical' RS-27 production details. GB&W #316-317
operated still in C&NW paint with a large GREEN BAY ROUTE herald on
the cab sides during 1967-1968. Two of the RS-27s were still on the roster
at the time of the WC purchase in 1993.

During the heydays of the 1930s the Western Refrigerator Line operated a
fleet of wooden refrigerator cars, many with billboard lettering such as
this. The E.J. Balza Company was located in Duck Creek, west of Green Bay.
It ran into financial trouble during the Great Depression and was sold to
Stokley Brothers. Stokley-Van Camp continued to operate the factory for
several decades and the factory is still in existance.

their 37' Trinity two bay covered hopper as an assembled model with new
GBW road numbers. The ready-to-run car is painted gray with black
reporting marks (no herald, no name) and car data in black and red. The
model comes fully assembled with a detailed body, roof hatches, a thin

As WRX reefers were shopped in the 1950s, many were repainted in the
scheme used on these cars. The scheme lasted until the 1960s when most of
the remaining cars were painted in a much simpler scheme. In the early
1960s some of the GBW #700-899 steel boxcars were painted red with a
'Packers' logo. The WRX cars are a close match for their prototypes, but
the red boxcar models have 8' PS doors while the prototypes had a 6-foot
Superior 7-panel doors.

The GBW acquired its first steel 40' PS-1 boxcars in 1950. The cars were
boxcar red with black ends.(white lettering) Some were later repainted
with boxcar red ends and a larger 12" high roadname. Yellow boxcars
(black lettering) first arrived in 1959 and green boxcars (yellow
lettering) in 1962. In the early 1960s some boxcars were repainted bright
red (white lettering, some with the smaller road name, others with the
larger road name). By the early 1970s most boxcars were repainted yellow
and the railroad began using a slightly bolder font on its freight cars.

The Green Bay and Western Railroad modernized its boxcar fleet in the
early 1970s with the acquisition of several hundred 50-foot boxcars
rebuilt from 40-foot cars. These cars were painted yellow with black
lettering and had the familiar red-and-white GREEN BAY ROUTE herald. They
were primarily used for paper mill service and were a common sight in GBW
trains throughout the 1970s and 1980s, as well as Ann Arbor and Chesapeake
& Ohio trains connecting via the Lake Michigan car ferries. Some cars
remained in wood chip service into the 1990s.

Prototype info:
The Walthers car is of an earlier style Thrall car while the GBW fleet was
of more recent vintage (circa 1973). The main difference between the older
and newer cars was the sizes of the doors. Older cars such as the Walthers
model have different size doors with the far right door being one foot
wider than the far left door. The two middle doors are within a few inches
of the far left door width. On newer Thrall cars, all doors appear to be
the same size.

sheathed boxcars built for the Milwaukee Road and Green Bay & Western

Prototype info:
The GBW and Milwaukee Road had a fleet of 8'-7' inside height single door
boxcars. The GBW tagged onto the Milwaukee's order in 1925 and acquired
200 identical cars. The cars became the GBW 6000-6298 and KGBW 5500-5598
series, using even numbers only. 146 of these cars lasted to 1948. In 1965
GBW still had 21 cars in service, and two of them remained until the
1970s.

Prototype info:
The Green Bay Route operated two S-1 switchers, a KGB&W #103
(1941-1968) and GB&W #102 (1949-1968). #103 was a 'Phase-1' S-1, and
#102 was a 'Phase-2.' The Phase-1 unit, #103, had a flush radiator and
smaller, more numerous radiator shutter slats, as well as a round radiator
fan housing.
