Business Car #603

Up ]

Business car #603 was a standard GB&W wooden caboose which received bay windows in the 1937-1940 rebuild program.

The wood caboose was rebuilt with a metal bay window in 1943.  It was converted to an officer's car in August 1947 and painted dark green with gold lettering to indicate the new car purpose.  It was usually assigned to Whitehall Division Superintendent Van Dreese at Wisconsin Rapids.

Joe Stauber photo, October 7, 1966.
From the collection of Scott Janz.

The car was scrapped in 1972 and the body was sold and used as a cabin until 1996; it is now part of a residence in Lakewood, Wis.  As the owner of the caboose body reports:

I worked for the GBW in 1971 and 1972. I worked in the paint shop under the supervision of George Taylor. When the business car #1776 was built I made all the lettering and painted it the red, white and blue. I wood grained the two exterior doors on the inside to match the paneling on the walls. The 1776 replaced the business car #603. I acquired the #603 from Weldon McGee in the fall of 1972. I used it for a cabin until 1996. It is now a part of my home which I attached to it. It is used as a kitchen, dining area and office.
