Resin Car Works will be
producing a HO scale resin kit for a 'chiseled side' twin hopper.
Preproduction models show cast-on ladder rungs and grab irons. Resin
Car Works has indicated that they will not be producing any KGB&W or
GB&W decals for this kit.
Product info:
Resin Car Works, P.O. Box 42. Byron, IL 61010
Web: http://www.resincarworks.com/
E-mail: rcw2@resincarworks.com
Prototype info:
KGB&W hoppers #401-420 were built in 1949 and remained on the railroad
until 1988. Originally painted oxide red, they were repainted yellow with
blacker lettering around 1970 when the KGB&W was absorbed into the
GB&W. Two of these hoppers were converted into covered hopper for
engine sand service. The 'chiseled side' twin hopper was very similar to
the 1935 AAR standard twin hopper, with minor detail variations. Most
notable are the seven equally - spaced reinforcing gussets along to top of
each side of the car, double rows of rivets along the 1st, 3rd, 5th and
7th ribs, and end bays which were more sharply angled than on the more
common AAR 1935 standard design - hence the term ''chiseled side.' Besides
the 20 KGB&W hoppers, the Illinois Central had 12,000 hoppers of this
design and the Escanaba & Lake Superior Railroad had some also.
