Unweathered ModelHere is the painted and lettered model before it was weathered. This picture was taken at Norwood Yard on my under-construction Green Bay & Waupaca Railroad. At this point the tool box was still located under the frame of the caboose; I opted to remove it for the final model since the Green Bay and Western didn't have it on their cabooses. |

The Big PictureHere is a panorama of the entire scene. The grain elevator is a Walthers kit, extended by two silos and with a few additional ladders, landings, and rooftop equipment added. The silos and head house still need weathering before they get incorporated into the layout. The GREEN BAY ROUTE logo was a landmark on the prototype grain elevator in Green Bay. Although the rest of the model is not an exact match for the prototype, that logo does more to establish a location for my model than all of the prototype dimensions available. Much thanks and gratitude goes out to Scale Rail Graphics for the custom decal of the 13-scale-foot wide logo. |

Staging the PhotoAnd here's how the photo was staged: The diorama was a simple structure made of plywood, plaster, and some ground foam scenery. The models were arranged on a picnic table at a park on a bluff overlooking Lake Michigan, near my home. The bluff gives me a good, simple background sky, uncluttered by trees when you're down at ground level. I only wish there had been a few clouds in the air that day -- usually the cold waters of the lake are big asset in that aspect. |
