THE GREEN BAY AND WESTERN RAILROAD

One of the most "hometown" of all the railroads to cross the State of Wisconsin was the Green Bay and Western. This fact didn't escape our feature modeler, Marv Preussler.

Oftentimes, this type of prototype railroad lends itself well to our modeling endeavors. Things such as the old roundhouse and back shops, Alco locomotives that most railroad executives would consider obsolete, a marginal physical plant, these are the things that most people would associate with this line. Marv had been an avid HO scale Wisconsin Central modeler before he switched to the Green Bay & Western. Marv builds a layout differently than most other modelers as he likes to finish a scene complete with all details before laying more track, allowing him to make changes for more photogenic scenes. He is a prolific builder of both rolling stock and structures. Often, you can view some of his work in the Winnebagoland Division contest room. Marv is very active in the NMRA Achievement Program and holds certificates as a Master Builder in the Motive Power and Scenery categories.

When you enter the layout room, you notice the Norwood Yard complex and the infamous grain elevator that stood nearby. (see photo). Other interesting scenes that are finished include Broadway tower in Green Bay, the Blue Circle Cement company, and the yard office at Norwood. He is modeling from Norwood, east to Kewaunee, with a carferry planned at that port. The operation also features the line west from Norwood with Seymour and Black Creek being the featured towns. This line then terminates in an 80 car staging yard that holds cars for Wisconsin Rapids/Winona. The biggest challenge will be scratchbuilding the carferry at Kewaunee. Don Manlick has been a great help to Marv since he is currently involved in building one himself. The layout is 30% complete and features DCC for realistic operation.

We look forward to watching the progress on his fine layout.
