KGB&W #142 was one of four similar ex-New York Central 0-6-0
steam switching locomotives acquired from General Equipment Co. in 1923-25.

These locomotives were a link between the early history of the railroad, and
the modern times to come.  They replaced the railroad's original 0-4-0
and 0-6-0 switch engines #1, 3, 4, 5, and 6, which were built in
the 1800s.  In turn, these locomotives were retired in the 1940s after
being made obsolete by the first diesel-electric locomotives on the railroad.
The view below from 1938 shows the engine after it was shopped in the 1930s
and renumbered from the 40- series to the 140- series, the headlight was moved
from the top of the smokebox to the smokebox door, and it received the tender
from GB&W #145 including a bolted-on steel herald on the sides.
