Stan Mailer, R.I.P.

Up ]

Stan Mailer, author of the seminal book "The Green Bay and Western: From Moguls to Alcos" (Hundman Publishing, 1989), passed away in Dallas Texas on April 2, 2013.  A brief obituary was in the Dallas Morning News. Besides his book, he also was the author of the following magazine articles on the GB&W:

"The Green Bay & Western," Model Railroader, February & April 1978.

"Rebuilding HO Scale Alco 420 and 424 Road Switchers," Model Railroader, July 1981

"The Brand-New Alco with the Very Strange Nose," Trains, January 1985

"Rolling Stock of the GB&W - the early cars," Mainline Modeler, August, September & October 1991.

"Green Bay & Western," Mainline Modeler, March 1993.

"Building a KGB&W Bay Window Caboose," Mainline Modeler, April 2001.

His two-piece article in Model Railroad in 1978 first opened my eyes to the uniqueness of the GB&W. I was a teenage modeler at the time and up until then every "A Railroad You Can Model" article was from some far-away place; all of a sudden the railroad that ran through my hometown (New Franken), the towns I attended junior and senior high school (Casco and Luxemburg), and the largest cities near me (Green Bay and Sturgeon Bay) appeared in an article, with locations I could relate to.

He wrote many prototype articles in Trains magazine in the 1970s, modeling articles starting in 1957 and also wrote the book The Omaha Road: Chicago, St Paul, Minneapolis & Omaha (Hundman Publishing, 2005).
