Bob Gile caught eastbound Train No. 2 as it crossed the
        Chicago & North Western tracks at Merrillan late in the
        afternoon on May 3,
        1984.

        Things were still in full swing on the Green Bay Route at this
        time: the bridge across the Mississippi River was still open (it would
        be closed the following year), and Train No. 2 was rushing freight from
        western markets to the Lake Michigan carferry connection at Kewaunee,
        Wis.  Train No. 2 typically passed through Merrillan around noon;
        evidently it was running quite late on this day.
