A series of pictures taken at Norwood Shops in March 1977 while accompanying
Michigan Northern #1501 (ex- GBW #304) to the shop for traction motor repairs.
These pictures were taken while accompanying the Michigan Northern #1501 (former
GBW #304) to Green Bay's Norwood Yard shop for traction motor repairs. At that time,
the Michigan Northern had no facilities for traction motor work. Since the owners of
MIGN's green and white Alco were paying the car fare of photographer Paul Baumgartner, most of the pictures were
taken of work being done to #1501.
As Paul tells it:
"The routing took us across on the Ann Arbor from Elberta to Kewanee. At the
time of this particular crossing, I remember riding on the City of Milwaukee. I probably
have a few pictures of the boat somewhere also, but they may be more difficult to find.
"One real thrill was a visit to the engine room on the City while under way.
The boat had a huge reciprocating steam engine. I never saw anything like it before or
since. I could have sat in there and watched that engine for days. The boat engineer
thought I was crazy. From Kewanee, I rode the GB&W boat train in what I remember as a
yellow bay window steel caboose to Norwood. Rode rough, nothing fancy.
"I can safely say I learned more about the care and feeding of Alcos from
the craftsman at Norwood in one week than I would have in several years of experimenting
by myself. The visit was a rare and wonderful experience. Knowledge gained at Norwood and
applied later went a long way toward keeping the MIGN moving for the next several
years."
