The Wisconsin Rapids engine terminal, six hours after the Fox Valley & Western Railroad takeover.

The End of an Era:
With the end of the Green Bay & Western, Trains No. 1 & 2 were replaced by Wisconsin Central Trains FLO76 & 77.  Here is a summary of the GBW power on those early trains:

August 28 (Saturday):
GBW 323-319-311
(ran to Stevens Point from Wisconsin Rapids only)

August 29 (Sunday):
GBW 323-319-311

August 30 (Monday):
GBW 323-319-311

August 31 (Tuesday)
GBW 321-316-309

September 1 (Wednesday):
GBW 309-321-316

September 2 (Thursday.):
GBW 309-316-323

September 3 (Friday):
GBW 309-311 WC 4508
GBW 320 was at Wisconsin Rapids for switching

September 4 (Saturday)
WC 2402-2500-815
GBW 320 was at Wisconsin Rapids,
GBW 318 on Biron job;
GBW 309 was at Stevens Point switching the east end of yard until she blew out a traction motor on front truck early that afternoon, then parked.
GBW 316- 323 were parked at Stevens Point.

GBW 318 used at Wisconsin Rapids switching until September 9 when she was sent to Stevens Point with the other GBW Alcos and parked.
Sunrise on August 28, 1993 looked like just another sunny summer Saturday in Wisconsin -- but for the Green Bay & Western RR it was anything but that.  The Wisconsin Central had completed its takeover of the railroad at 12:01 a.m., merging it with the Fox River Valley Railroad to form the new Fox Valley & Western Railroad. GBW 311-319-323 pulled the final Train No. 1 into Wisconsin Rapids, where the rest of it's journey was annulled.

Late that evening, several of the GBW's famous all-Alco diesel fleet congregated at the "Rapids" engine terminal: locomotives 311, 316, 318, 319, 321, and 323.

The Alco engines were soon deemed surplus by the WC management and were either sold or scrapped.
