It's 1961 and the Green Bay Route's FA-1s are soon facing the end of
their career.
The Green Bay & Western's FA-1 units ushered in the era of diesel power
on fast freights on the railroad in the late 1940s. By the early 1960s
increased tonnage had made their 1500 HP engines unsuitable for the task,
even with multiple unit lash-ups. The five cab units were traded in on newer
and higher horsepower Alco RS-27 and Century 424 models
between 1960 and 1965.
This classic train photo comes from a 1986 calendar. It's the fall of
1961, and a pair of the FA-1s haul a train east of east of Casco Junction, near
the town of Scarboro.
