One of the Green Bay Route's RS-20's at work in Green Bay.
Green Bay & Western #308 was one of four Alco RS-3's which were rebuilt
with a 2000 horsepower generator and a low front nose by the GB&W's
Norwood Shop crew. The controls were also rearranged so that the short low
hood was now the front of the engine. These units were dubbed
"RS-20's" by railfans. This photo was taken in Green Bay on September 13, 1975.
As a testament to the skills of the Norwood workers, this particular
locomotive is still hard at work on the Kankakee, Beaverville and Southern,
twenty-five years after it was rebuilt! The loco only spent twenty years
in its original RS-3 configuration.
