Train No. 1 waits for a crew to take it westward across the state.

Alco C-430 #315 and C-424 #314 are in Norwood yard ready to haul fast freight train No. 1 to Winona.  Train No. 1's scheduled departure time was 3:45 PM, although the actual send-off depended upon the arrival of the Lake Michigan car ferries at Kewaunee.  This picture from the west end of Norwood Yard and shows the landmark Didion grain elevator in the background.

Now this is how I remember the Green Bay & Western!  Bright red locomotives with white lettering, black frames and cab hoods, and yellow handrails. My great-aunt and -uncle lives on Norwood Street a block from the yard and I would often go to this location to watch trains being assembled in the 1970s.

This picture comes from a postcard offered by Railcards.com (apparently out of business) that says "Like many railfans, Green Bay & Western  has a penchant for ALCO Diesels.  Freshly painted C430 #315, on "hi-adhesion" trucks and C424 lead Train #1-W out of Green Bay WI in August 1977.

Postcard, August 1977.
