GBW #305-308 were Alco RS-3s rebuilt with Alco 251 2000-horsepower
engines and a lowered short hood.
After rebuilding the higher horsepower along with additional weight made the locomotives ideal for the frequent switching required at paper making plants along the railroad. The photo below shows GBW #308 with a cut of 50' boxcars in Wisconsin Rapids in the summer of 1980. The heavy black smoke was proof that an Alco engine provided the power. |
