Auto-Train dome car at Green Bay & Western's Norwood Shops, April 1982.

Auto-Train dome-observation car #901 (originally Union Pacific #9001 built by ACF Industries in 1955) was sold to the Green Bay & Western in early 1982.  It was outfitted as the railroad's second business car (along with GBW #1776).

This photo from April 1982 shows the car still in Auto-Train paint in GB&W's Norwood Yard.  The shop crew soon named the car "Trempealeau River" gave it a new  paint scheme, which it kept until the railroad was sold to the Wisconsin  Central in 1993.  In 1997 the car was rebuilt as Algoma Central's "Algoma Country."

Auto-Train:

In the 1970s, privately-financed Auto-Train Corporation operated passenger trains between Virginia and Florida.  The train operation was unique, not only because it started up nearly the same time that most other long-distance passenger service was either eliminated or consolidated as part of Amtrak, but also because the trains carried not only passengers but also their automobiles.  The company operated two trains which consisted of dome cars from several western railroads.  After several successful years, Auto-Train took a turn for the worse in 1976 when it had its first money-losing year after several derailments.  An unprofitable expansion on a second route in 1977 led to bankruptcy and the end of Auto-Train in April 1981.
